DIIV Debut ZIRP! Songs And Cover Charli xcx At Balaclava Fest In São Paulo
The band played unreleased material from their A. G. Cook-produced album and closed out with a version of "Playboy Bunny" on Sunday night.
DIIV turned their Balaclava Fest set in São Paulo, Brazil into a preview of their next record. On Sunday, the band gave live debuts to several songs from ZIRP!, the album produced by A. G. Cook that arrives next month.
The set included first live performances of the already-released singles "The Fountain" and "Kid," along with three songs that have yet to be issued: "Dare Me," "My Star," and "Trillions." It marked the first time audiences heard that material outside of the studio versions.
The night's biggest surprise came from outside the band's catalog entirely. DIIV covered Charli xcx's "Playboy Bunny," a B-side from Music, Fashion, Film that was also produced by Cook. In their hands, the track turned swirly and electrified, filtered through the band's guitar-heavy approach.
Footage from the festival crowd began circulating online shortly after the performance, capturing both the cover and the new songs. The Brazilian date effectively served as the opening of DIIV's next chapter, with ZIRP! due out in a matter of weeks and a touring cycle around it ahead.
