You Are An Angel, J McClendon's project, drops outtakes "Candyglass" and "Baroque"
Both songs were cut late from It's Fine To Dream, the debut album from the former Glass Beach leader, and arrive with brand new mixes.
J McClendon, who previously fronted the hyper-online emo band Glass Beach, released two new songs over the weekend under her You Are An Angel moniker. "Candyglass" and "Baroque" are leftovers from the sessions for It's Fine To Dream, the project's debut album, which came out earlier this year.
McClendon said both tracks were in contention for the record but were cut relatively late in the process because they clashed tonally with the rest of the album. Each has been given a fresh mix for its official release. "I always loved these two tracks a lot," she wrote.
The pair largely sets aside the epic scope that defines much of McClendon's catalog in favor of straightforward emo-pop, though the closing stretch of "Candyglass" swells back into bigger territory. On "Baroque," she sings the line "You're not listening."
The songwriter also signaled that plenty more You Are An Angel material is on the way, likely arriving as singles or small EPs before another full-length. She said focusing on individual songs has been a relief compared to sustaining that level of polish across 45 minutes to an hour of music, and that she has been running genre experiments that hold up better on their own than they would grouped on a single album. Some of her favorite songs she has ever written, she added, are still to come.
