Olivia Rodrigo, Tramhaus and Sour Widows top this week's best new songs

Stereogum's weekly rundown of the best new songs — a list whose eligibility window closes every Thursday just before midnight — landed on tracks by Sour Widows, Tramhaus, untitled (halo) and Olivia Rodrigo, plus a fist-pumping rock single called "My Rage." The picks also feed the site's Favorite New Music playlist, updated weekly.

The biggest name is Rodrigo. "Serena Joy" is an outtake from you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, an album tightly organized around a doomed-relationship arc, which may explain why a protest song inspired by The Handmaid's Tale didn't make the cut. The track leans fully into icy dance-rock, with twitchy drum machines and a churning bassline that recall prime New Order, and Rodrigo moving from robotic monotone to full-throated howl.

Sour Widows contribute "Lucky Star," whose uncanny riffs are likened to a haunted-house ride while Maia Sinaiko sings of shattered mirrors, knives, soot, cracks in walls, black holes and a star offered as salvation.

Rotterdam's Tramhaus turn up with "Swarm," a song the band frames around the self and its image — whether a person is built from the ideas of others or their own thoughts. What carries it, though, is sheer volume: unruly guitars and strained vocals.

Rounding out the list is new group untitled (halo), signed to Dirty Hit, the label behind The 1975 and beabadoobee. They describe their sound as California Melancholia, and their debut single, "aimee lou wood freestyle," is named after the actress who broke out on The White Lotus. It pairs noise-blasted guitars with booming electronics and genre-fluid vocals.
