Mike Huguenor turns his solo album into an actual Game Boy game
The Jeff Rosenstock, Hard Girls and Classics of Love musician released Surfing the Web With the Alien: The Game, also playable on Steam
Mike Huguenor, a member of the Jeff Rosenstock band and a veteran of Hard Girls and Classics of Love, has released a real Game Boy game. It's called Surfing the Web With the Alien: The Game, and it's built around his solo album of the same name. Players who don't own the handheld can also play it on Steam.
According to a press release, every level draws on games that shaped Huguenor's own taste, with nods stretching from Castlevania and EarthBound to skateboarding titles and Frogger-style challenges. The result is less a single genre than a run through his personal favorites.
The press materials also describe the game's structure as an echo of life on tour: one obstacle clears the way for another, plans collapse and get rebuilt, and the idea of the perfect show stays just out of reach.
The project extends Huguenor's habit of pushing his releases past the usual formats. Rather than pairing the album with videos or a run of dates alone, he converted the record into something interactive, aimed at a 1990s handheld that has quietly become a home for independent developers again.
