Mike Dirnt says Green Day played a 200-capacity basement after 'Nimrods' premiere

Mike Dirnt has revealed that Green Day followed the Los Angeles premiere of 'Nimrods' with an impromptu performance in a basement room that holds roughly 200 people. Speaking to Rock Sound, the bassist said the band played for about an hour and stuck almost entirely to very early material.

Dirnt described the setup as completely stripped down: bass, drums, guitar and two vocal mics, with only him, Billie Joe Armstrong and Tré Cool on hand. He argued that returning to that kind of bare-bones environment every so often is important, comparing it to remembering that a musician is not just the race car driver but also the mechanic.

The bassist added that the night left him thinking about the band's long history, and suggested all three members are in a similarly reflective place right now. He credited their chemistry to a musical shorthand the trio built when they were very young, calling it "another language that only we speak fluently."

Dirnt did not specify which songs the band revisited in the basement, saying only that the set leaned on old material and that the group tore through it. The performance came directly after the 'Nimrods' premiere, which he cited as the starting point for the night.
