Turnstile and DIIV land on Stereogum's best songs of the week list

Stereogum published its weekly rundown of the five best new songs, and two names tied to the alternative scene made the cut: Turnstile and DIIV. The list runs on a Thursday-to-Thursday eligibility window and feeds the site's Favorite New Music playlist, updated every week.

The headline pick is Rod Lee's rework of "Never Enough," pulled from Never Enough: Versions, Turnstile's collection of remixes and covers. Lee is a foundational Baltimore club DJ and producer behind "Dance My Pain Away," a track released more than two decades ago that reached listeners outside the city partly through The Wire soundtrack. His version pushes the band's Baltimore club leanings further than the breakbeat and show sample they used on "Look Out For Me," pairing the genre's signature drum shuffle with Brendan Yates' reverb-soaked howl.

DIIV appear with "Kid," a song that links adult pain to childhood hurt and continues the lighter direction the band has taken since 2019's Deceiver, an album built on addiction-focused lyrics and heavy guitars. Zachary Cole Smith repeatedly asks "Does it get better?" across the track, which the site framed as a hiding place from the weight of adulthood.

The rest of the list includes Fine Glindvad's "Everything In The Shade," praised for the way its music-box melody cuts off dead after nearly four minutes of gentle drift, and a Tyler, The Creator production driven by a jubilant beat and back-and-forth verses.
