Phoebe Bridgers, Father John Misty and Mercury top Stereogum's songs of the week
The weekly roundup spans slowcore, garage rock and pop, led by "On Video," a new Bridgers track tied to her third album Lost Weekend
Stereogum has published its weekly list of the five best new songs, covering an eligibility window that runs from Thursday to Thursday. The picks are collected on the site's Favorite New Music Spotify playlist, with an expanded version available to subscribers on Spotify and Apple Music.
Phoebe Bridgers lands on the list with "On Video," a Primetime song that opens as a cryptic acoustic sprawl before bursting into a distorted whirlwind, swinging between quiet and loud passages. The publication points to Alex G, one of the collaborators on her third album Lost Weekend, as a clear influence on the track's dark, absorbing atmosphere.
Also featured is "Roar Of The Heliac Goat" by Mercury, the project of Nashville musician Maddie Kerr. Produced by Alex Farrar, the song pushes Kerr's mix of roots-rock and grunge toward slowcore, pairing gnarly riffs with delicate melodies. Father John Misty contributes a six-minute reverie in which Josh Tillman spins a literary, hallucinatory narrative that builds toward a slow-motion crescendo of voices and trumpets.
Rounding out the selection are "Hands Tied" by Emma Ogier, described as greasy, lived-in garage rock about a love meant to last, with muted drums that eventually turn loud and stomping, and "Brainrot" by Tinashe, from her album Popstar. The song leans on internet slang to address numbness and an online-addicted generation, carried by a sticky hook.
The entries are written by the site's editors, who run the feature every week.
