Patrick Stump marks 25 years of Fall Out Boy in Instagram post
The singer looked back on being 17 when the band formed and joked that Fall Out Boy has now reached car-rental age
Patrick Stump has posted a lengthy note on Instagram marking 25 years of Fall Out Boy. The singer framed the anniversary around the milestones attached to certain ages — a learner's permit, cigarettes, legal drinking — and landed on the idea that the band has now hit the age at which you can rent a car.
Stump recalled being 17 when the group started, writing that at the time he couldn't picture a life beyond 21. At 42, he said he finds both his own age and the band's longevity hard to process, along with the fact that people still want to hear what he called "our silly little band."
The vocalist also addressed the earliest lineups. He named Ben and Mike from those early incarnations and wished them well, but said he always felt the band truly began when Andy Hurley agreed to join, more than a year in. By that measure, he joked, the current four-piece wouldn't reach car-rental age until sometime in mid-2028.
Stump pushed back on the idea that the hiatus broke the group's run, writing that the four of them were still very much a band during that stretch. He closed by saying he hopes to spend another 25 years — and another 25 after that — in the same group, and worked in a jab noting that Hurley remains straight edge.
