Olivia Rodrigo guides a new generation to the loud stuff on Unraveled Tour

At her Toronto stop, the singer delivered 24 songs in two hours and made the alternative lineage inside her catalog impossible to miss.

Olivia Rodrigo's Unraveled tour landed in Toronto for a two-hour, 24-song set that balanced older favorites like "good 4 u," "favorite crime" and "vampire" with most of the material from her latest album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.

The staging follows the seasons, tracing a relationship from its beginning to its collapse across a full year. The show opens in spring and closes with a pseudo-encore billed as spring II. Before Rodrigo appeared, a massive half-moon screen showed her lying in a field of flowers while birdsong and insect noise filled the arena, a sharp turn from the rock bravado of her earlier tours. "We know how that ended," she joked about once imagining the record would be all love songs.

The set moves between communal singalongs, as on "deja vu," and harder jolts like "all-american bitch." The effect lands close to the catharsis of the best emo and punk records, where heartbreak is the throughline and the chorus belongs as much to the crowd as to the performer.

Rodrigo has never hidden her influences, from Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill to Hole, Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple, and the tour's support reflects that. Devon Again, the Last Dinner Party and Wolf Alice are along for the run, with the latter pulling from across its discography in Toronto as vocalist Ellie Rowsell made an arena feel like a sweaty club.

At one point she asked an audience of nearly 20,000, largely made up of young women, to think of something that makes them angry and scream as loudly as possible. The entry point to the genre may no longer be a basement show or a record store, but the Unraveled tour is building another one.
