New Dawn Fades, the Joy Division stage play, opens ticket sales for 2027 run

The Manchester production builds its story around Tony Wilson, Martin Hannett and Factory Records rather than a straight band biography.

New Dawn Fades: A Play About Joy Division & Manchester is back in focus as tickets go on sale for its 2027 performances. Rather than marching through a chronology of band milestones, the production works as a fragmented portrait of the late-seventies North-West, using a virtual set built from 1979 archival debris and Free Trade Hall imagery.

Lauren directs and also appears as Debbie Curtis, grounding a narrative that otherwise spins outward. Josh plays Ian Curtis without leaning on impersonation, presenting the singer as a conduit for the damp, claustrophobic atmosphere of the city instead of an icon frozen on a poster. Brian Gorman's Tony Wilson repeatedly breaks the fourth wall, framing the Factory Records founder as a man curating his own legend while narrating his city's decline.

The play places Joy Division inside a wider ecosystem, nodding to the agit-pop surge that also produced The Fall and Buzzcocks. Manager Rob Gretton appears as an agent of organised chaos, while producer Martin Hannett is staged as a studio eccentric whose unworkable instructions, including making drummers play in absurd conditions, ended up reshaping the band's sound. Wilson's later ventures, among them The Haçienda and its collision with the city's underworld, are folded into the same arc of contradictions.

Musically, the ensemble performs material such as Shadowplay and Transmission, and the staging handles Curtis's death without sensationalism. Love Will Tear Us Apart closes the show in its harshest context, leaving the room caught between grief and celebration.

Tickets for the 2027 dates are available now through the production's official booking page.
