Harrison Gordon releases BLISS, an abrasive grunge record on Hopeless Records
The project that carries the musician's own name trades in heavy guitars, feedback and sudden melodic turns across an album that is out now
Harrison Gordon has released BLISS, a new album out now via Hopeless Records. Despite the name, the project functions as a band, serving as the musical vehicle for Harrison Gordon himself.
The record leans on a crusty strain of grunge that swings between heavy, angry grinding and stretches of velvety melody. That approach shows up immediately on opener "Weirdo", which starts mellow before collapsing into a wall of guitars. "Milwaukee Josh" follows with a grimly dark mood, while "Buffalo Jim" stands out as the most tuneful moment on the album, blending a Pixies-style howl with Hüsker Dü musicality.
Elsewhere, BLISS is abrasive and at times punishing, built on torrents of grinding guitar, impassioned vocals and howls of feedback. Self-deprecating lyrical themes run through the songs, and the melodic core is repeatedly undercut by atonal passages and unexpected tempo changes.
