FFO: Chillin lands on Stereogum's best songs of the week with "Fresh Start"
The 85-second pop-punk track was picked alongside new songs from Marika Hackman, Slayyyter and John Errol in the site's weekly roundup.
Stereogum published its weekly list of the five best new songs, and FFO: Chillin made the cut with "Fresh Start", the only straight-ahead pop-punk entry in this edition. The staff-chosen list runs on an eligibility window that opens and closes Thursdays just before midnight.
In its write-up, the site notes that the band's grungy take on pop-punk lines up with recent trends but sets itself apart with actual riffs. Clocking in at 85 seconds, "Fresh Start" packs in pull-offs, hammer-ons and string bends over big drums and hooky vocals, landing close to the emo-as-power-pop territory of Oso Oso. The piece also points out that the group toured with Joyce Manor this year.
The rest of the list pulls from very different corners. John Errol appears with "Like It Like That", taken from his upcoming album Damage and described as a smooth, subtly haunted pop song with a noir-ish edge. British singer-songwriter Marika Hackman is included for "33", the lead single from False Dogs, which weighs the fear of aging against the pull to keep going, with a children's choir chanting "Keep pushing".
Slayyyter rounds out the picks with "i think he's got a girl". She released WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA earlier this year, named by Stereogum the best album of the year so far back in June, and is preparing the companion record wor$t man in america. The new track leans into hazy, rock-infused pop rather than the sleazy electro-pop of its predecessor.
All five songs are collected on the publication's Favorite New Music playlist, updated every week.
