156/Silence break down the experimentation behind new album 'From A Distance'

156/Silence have released 'From A Distance', a new full-length that pushes the band's blend of metalcore, hardcore and post-hardcore further into its own territory. Speaking to Rock Sound, vocalist Jack Murray said the band feels like it is about to level up again following the reception to previous album 'People Watching'.

Murray explained that 'People Watching' was the first record to bring in sung choruses, which opened up new options for his writing. This time the focus shifted toward soundscapes and more structured songwriting. The goal, he said, was catchy and meaningful songs that avoid feeling cheesy, carrying over the eerie atmosphere of the last album while making it dreamier. The band wanted to lean into a prettier side of metalcore without losing the weight.

The album features three guests. Tony of Crippling Alcoholism appears on 'Collateral', continuing the spoken word element the band has used before. Mike Hranica of The Devil Wears Prada also features; Murray noted that both are from Monroeville and that he has been a fan of Prada since sixth grade. Alex Reade of Make Them Suffer rounds out the list, with Murray praising her vocal contribution.

The vocalist also pointed to the community built around the band, including a Discord server and Twitch streams of their sets, and said hearing European crowds sing the songs back remains surreal. On the commercial side, he cited more than 3,000 vinyl pre-orders and most VIP packages for the upcoming tour already sold out, while crediting label Pure Noise for its promotional work.

156/Silence head to the UK and Europe supporting The Devil Wears Prada. Looking ahead, Murray said he and Jim are writing heavier material for fun, with sung tracks likely mixed in and one electronic song already finished but roughly a year away from release.
