Neighborhood Ghost, offshoot of a Green Day tribute band, debuts track from Spirit Weak
The New York project features members of Up For Nothing, With the Punches, Our Finest Hour and Never Say Die, and pairs punk hooks with metal-leaning riffs.
Neighborhood Ghost is the new original band built out of Paper Lanterns, the New York group devoted to playing Green Day deep cuts. The lineup pulls from Up For Nothing, Our Finest Hour, With the Punches and Never Say Die, and the band has now unveiled the first song from its debut album, Spirit Weak.
Speaking with Punknews.org contributing editor Samantha Barrett, guitarist James Brady said learning material for the tribute band kept a guitar in his hands far more often than usual, which naturally pushed him toward writing again. He tracked ideas into Pro Tools in his basement, then sent the first finished song to vocalist Justin Conigliaro, who returned fully formed vocal ideas within two days. More songs followed quickly.
Conigliaro, who sang and played guitar in Up For Nothing, said stepping away from the instrument streamlined his role. Receiving complete arrangements let him focus entirely on melody and lyrics, though he occasionally picked up a guitar to strip a section down to basic chords when a vocal line refused to land.
The songs mix punk hooks with heavier guitar work. Brady, who runs a busy YouTube channel built around playing and teaching, traced that to his own background, noting that metal is where his playing began while Paper Lanterns reconnected him with nineties punk. Blending the two, balancing major and minor keys around Conigliaro's delivery, became the central challenge of the record.
Conigliaro added that writing over an unfamiliar style forced him into vocal choices he would not have considered otherwise. No release date for Spirit Weak has been announced yet.
