Mike Patton Brings Mondo Cane To Mexico For The First Time With Mariachi Gama 1000

At Mexico City's Palacio de Bellas Artes, the singer switched to Spanish-language standards for the encore

Published on · Reported from Stereogum

Mike Patton performed with Mondo Cane in Mexico for the first time on Thursday (Oct. 1). The project, built around covers of Italian pop songs from the '50s and '60s, played Mexico City's Palacio de Bellas Artes.

For the encore, Patton moved away from the Italian repertoire and into Mexican music, singing in Spanish on "La Llorona," the traditional song long associated with Chavela Vargas, Álvaro Carrillo's "Luz de Luna," popularized by Javier Solís, and Juan Gabriel's "Hasta Que Te Conocí."

Mariachi Gama 1000 walked onstage midway through "Retrovertigo," a Mr. Bungle song, and stayed for "Luz de Luna" and "Hasta Que Te Conocí." The Juan Gabriel cover carried extra weight at that venue: the late Mexican pop icon played a celebrated run of concerts at Bellas Artes in 1990, and Mariachi Gama 1000 had a longstanding working relationship with him.

Mondo Cane continues its Mexican run in Guanajuato as part of the 54th Festival Internacional Cervantino. Footage from Thursday's show has been circulating online.
