Brian Fallon tells Kerrang he's done hiding his influences, from Springsteen to blink-182
In a new interview with the British magazine, the singer laid out a deliberately wide list of references and said freedom is the whole point.
Brian Fallon sat down with Kerrang for a conversation about his influences and where he stands as an artist right now. "I feel so free, because I'm not hiding from anything," he told the magazine.
Fallon then ran through a list of things he loves that refuses to stay in one lane. Alongside classic American songwriters like Bruce Springsteen and Leonard Cohen, he named American Football, blink-182 and Alkaline Trio, and the simple thrill of jumping when the drum hits. The list kept going into less predictable territory: cargo pants, weird goth music, Playboi Carti.
He summed up the attitude by quoting a shirt a friend of his owns: "I am cringe and I am free." For Fallon, that freedom is the goal — refusing to filter his taste through anyone else's expectations.
The comments line up with a career that has always moved between heartland rock songwriting and the punk and emo records he grew up on, a mix audible both in his solo work and in the catalog he built fronting The Gaslight Anthem. The full interview is up at Kerrang.
